!BIRTH-DEATH-MARRIAGE-COMMENT-EMMIGRATION: "History of Hampton, NH - 1638 to
1892" by Joseph Dow, Volumes 1 & 2, Property of Herbert Philbrick, Rye, NH.
Pg 747 and 748.
Maurice or Morris Hobbs, according to tradition, left his native country of
England under the following singular circumstances: He had been paying his
addresses to a young lady, who, from some cuase not mentioned, turned him off;
and thereupon, he determined to emigrate to America. When the lady knew of it,
she relented, and, knowing he would pass her residence as he preceeded to
embark, placed herself in his view, hoping to bring about a reconciliation.
To her grief, she found him inexorable; and although she accosted him with the
afectionate enquiry, "Whither goest thou, Maurice?" yet he deigned not to turn
his head or look upon her. And they never saw each other more. He came to
Hampton between 1640 and 1645: Married Sarah, daughter of William Eastow and
lived with his father-in-law on the present homestead of Horace Hobbs of the
seventh generation.
