!BIRTH-LIFE-TIMECHART-ORIGIN-LANDGRANT-FREEMAN-WILL:
Thomas Philbrick (Filbrick) was baptized at St. Mary's Church,
Bures, Suffolk, England, in 1584. The original register of the Philbrick family
begins in 1538, covering four generations of the family. The name is
spelled Fylbrigg, Filbrigg, Philbrigg and Filbrick. An account of the
search for the background of Thomas Philbrick is carried in the D A R
Magazine, written by one Mary Philbrick, who visited England for that
purpose in the spring of 1931. It is apparent that the earliest spelling of
the name was Felbrigge or Felgrigg, derived from the town of Felbrigg in
County of Norfolk, now owned by the Wyndham-Cremer family, who
purchased it from the Felbrigg estate about 1460.
He and his family sailed from Yarmouth, England on April 8, 1630, and
arrived in Salem, Mass. on June 14, 1630. Settled in Charlestown, Mass.,
but soon moved to Watertown, Mass. Owned 5 acres of land in Watertown
around 1636. In 1645?? sold "eight lots" in Watertown to Isaac Stearns.
One record says he had seven children, although only 3 are identified.
Wife was also from England.
Thomas took "Freeman's Oath" on April 29, 1668, at the General Court in
Boston. This was then made to the Governor of Massachusetts, it's
purpose; "The oath of a Freeman, or of a man to be made Free."
This information from Samuel Dow's "History of Hampton, NH 1638-1892".
Early 1655;
"In the early part of this year, Thomas Philbrick, Sen., was chosen "culler
of staves", this was then an office pf considerable importance, for the great
quantities of staves which were taken by the town in payment of taxes
assessed upon the inhabitants, and these must all pass through the hands of
the culler. Persons might of course, at any time, make staves of the lumber
taken from their own land."
In 1656,The Trial of Goody Cole
"At the witchcraft trial of Eunice (Goody) Cole, who was arraigned before
the County Court of Norfolk, the testimony of a considerable number of
witnesses was ofered in support of the charges.
Thomas Philbrick testified that she [Goody Cole] had said, if his calves
should eat any of her grass "she wished they might poysen them or choke them",
and he further testified that he never saw one of his calves afterward, "and
the other calfe came home and died aboute a weeke later".
